Invega Trinza is a prescription medication used for the treatment of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Invega Trinza belongs to a group of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. It may work by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain.

This medication comes in an extended-release (long-acting) injectable form to be given directly into a muscle (IM) by a healthcare professional every 3 months. 

Common side effects of Invega Trinza include headache, weight gain, restlessness and slow or stiff movements.

Common side effects of Invega Trinza include the following:

Invega Trinza Interactions

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take:

  • high blood pressure medicines or medications that can cause an excessive drop in blood pressure when standing up
  • medications that increase the activity of the enzyme CYP3A4 such as carbamazepine (Tegretol, Equetro, Carbatrol), phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin), rifampin (Rifadin), St John's wort, and nimodipine (Nimotop)
  • levodopa (in Sinemet, in Stalevo)
  • antidepressants
  • certain antibiotics such as erythromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, Erythrocin), and moxifloxacin (Avelox)
  • certain antipsychotics such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), pimozide (Orap), risperidone (Risperdal) and thioridazine
  • medications for anxiety
  • medications for seizures
  • medications for irregular heartbeat such as amiodarone (Cordarone), disopyramide (Norpace), dofetilide (Tikosyn); procainamide (Procanbid, Pronestyl), quinidine (Quinidex), and sotalol (Betapace, Betapace AF)
  • sedatives
  • sleeping pills
  • tranquilizers

Invega Trinza Precautions

Invega Trinza has caused some rare, but serious side effects including Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) and changes in heart rhythm. It has also been associated with high blood sugar and diabetes, changes in cholesterol and triglycerides, and weight gain. Invega Trinza and similar medicines have been associated with decreases in white blood cell counts.

Serious side effects have been reported with Invega Trinza including the following:

  • Stroke. This is a condition where not enough blood is flowing to your brain. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have some or all of the following symptoms of stroke.
    • ​Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body)
    • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
    • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
    • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
    • Sudden severe headache with no known cause
  • QT prolongation. This is a condition when changes in the electrical activity of your heart occur, causing irregular heartbeats that can be life threatening. Talk to your healthcare provider about other medicines you are taking before you start taking Invega Trinza. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any signs or symptoms of QT prolongation:
    • feeling faint
    • lightheadedness
    • dizziness
    • feeling like your heart is beating irregularly or quickly
  • Seizures. Invega Trinza should be used with caution in people with a seizure disorder or those at increased risk for seizures.
  • Orthostatic Hypotension. This is a condition where there is a drop in blood pressure when standing up. Get out of bed slowly, resting your feet on the floor before standing, to avoid dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting while taking Invega Trinza.
  • While receiving Invega Trinza, you may experience increases in your blood sugar (hyperglycemia) even if you don't already have diabetes. You may be at an increased risk of developing diabetes if you receive Invega Trinza or similar medicines.

Invega Trinza can cause lack of muscle control. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Invega Trinza affects you.

Do not take Invega Trinza if you:

  • are allergic to Invega Trinza or to any of its ingredients
  • are allergic to risperidone (Risperdal) or any other similar medications.

Invega Trinza Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Invega Trinza, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

Before taking Invega Trinza, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic to Invega Trinza or to any of its ingredients
  • have or have ever had a prolonged QT interval (a rare heart problem that may cause fainting or irregular heartbeat)
  • have a slow or irregular heartbeat
  • have had a heart attack
  • have had a seizure
  • have had a stroke
  • have had a head injury
  • have high blood sugar or diabetes
  • have high cholesterol
  • have kidney problems
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

 

Invega Trinza and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

The FDA categorizes medications based on safety for use during pregnancy. Five categories - A, B, C, D, and X, are used to classify the possible risks to an unborn baby when a medication is taken during pregnancy.

Invega Trinza falls into category C. In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication and had some babies born with problems. No well-controlled studies have been done in humans. Therefore, this medication may be used if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the unborn child.

There is a pregnancy exposure registry that monitors pregnancy outcomes in women exposed to atypical antipsychotics, including Invega Trinza, during pregnancy. For more information contact the National Pregnancy Registry for Atypical Antipsychotics at 1-866-961-2388.

Invega Trinza and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Invega Trinza has been detected in human breast milk. Because of the possibility for adverse reactions in nursing infants from Invega Trinza, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or to stop use of this medication. The importance of the drug to the mother should be considered.

Invega Trinza Usage

Take Invega Trinza exactly as prescribed. This medication is available in an injectable form to be given directly into a muscle (IM) by a healthcare professional every 3 months. Patients must be treated with Invega Sustenna (1-month long-acting injectable solution) for 4 months before starting Invega Trinza.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of Invega Trinza at the same time.

Continue to take Invega Trinza even if you feel well. Do not stop taking palidperidone without talking to your doctor.

 

Invega Trinza Dosage

Receive Invega Trinza exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

The dose your doctor recommends may be based on the following:

  • the condition being treated
  • how you respond to this medication
  • your weight
  • your age
  • your kidney function

This medication is available in an injectable form to be dosed by a healthcare professional. It is given every 3 months. Your doctor can adjust your dose from time to time depending on your response to Invega Trinza.

 

Invega Trinza Overdose

If Invega Trinza is administered by a healthcare provider in a medical setting, it is unlikely that an overdose will occur. However, if overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention.

 

Other Requirements

Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order certain lab tests to check your body's response from time to time.

WARNING: INCREASED MORTALITY IN ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH DEMENTIA-RELATED PSYCHOSIS

  • Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death.
  • Invega Trinza is not approved for use in patients with dementia-related psychosis.
