Peridex is a prescription medication used to treat gingivitis, redness and swelling of gums, and to control gum bleeding. It is also used to help treat peridontitis, or gum disease. This medication belongs to a group of drugs called antimicrobials. It works by reducing bacteria in the mouth.

Peridex comes as an oral rinse. Use Peridex rinse regularly, as directed by your dentist, in addition to daily brushing. Spit out after use. Peridex rinse should not be swallowed. Do not rinse with water or other mouthwashes immediately after rinsing with Peridex.

Common side effects of the rinse include tooth discoloration, tartar buildup, and altered taste.

Peridex Interactions

No drug interactions have been determined by the manufacturer. However, you should tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Not all drug interactions are known or reported and new drug interactions are continually being reported.

Peridex Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with Peridex including the following:

  • Allergic symptoms. Tell your health care provider right away if you have some or all of the following symptoms of allergic symptoms.
    • skin rash
    • itch
    • generalized swelling
    • breathing difficulties
    • light headedness
    • rapid heart rate
    • upset stomach
    • diarrhea

Do not use Peridex if you have a known to be hypersensitive to chlorhexidine gluconate or other formula ingredients.

Peridex Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Peridex, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

Peridex and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

The FDA categorizes medications based on safety for use during pregnancy. Five categories - A, B, C, D, and X, are used to classify the possible risks to an unborn baby when a medication is taken during pregnancy.

Peridex falls into category B.  There are no well-done studies that have been done in humans with Peridex. In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication, and the babies did not show any medical issues related to this medication.

Peridex and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

It is not known if Peridex crosses into human milk. Because many medications can cross into human milk and because of the possibility for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants with use of this medication, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or stop the use of this medication. Your doctor and you will decide if the benefits outweigh the risk of using Peridex.

Peridex Usage

Use Peridex exactly as prescribed.

Peridex comes in a oral rinse. Recommended use for oral solution is twice daily oral rinsing for 30 seconds, morning and evening after toothbrushing. Peridexe rinse should not be swallowed, and should be spit out after use. Do not rinse with water or other mouthwashes immediately after rinsing with Peridex. Do not brush teeth or eat immediately after rinsing with Peridex.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of Peridex at the same time.

Peridex Dosage

Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

The recommended dose of Peridex (chlorhexidine) rinse for the treatment of treat gingivitis, redness and swelling of gums, and to control gum bleeding is 15ml (marked in cap) twice a day.

Peridex Overdose

If you or someone you know swallows Peridex, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center, or seek emergency medical attention right away.

Other Requirements

Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F ).

Keep this and all medicines out of the reach of children.
