This lab test measures monocytes which are a critical component of the immune system. High levels of monocytes are seen with inflammatory disorders and viral infections.
Monocytes are a specific type of white blood cells. Monocytes fight infection by surrounding and destroying bacteria and viruses.
Monoctyes are measured as a percentage. The normal range for monocytes is 2-6%.
Fasting is not required before the test
What the results mean
Elevated monocytes may be seen with inflammatory disorders, viral infections, and myeloproliferative disorders which are conditions that cause blood cells, platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells to grow abnormally in the bone marrow.
Lower than normal monocytes may be seen with an infection or an acute stress reaction.
