(RxWiki News) A recent survey of couples who are married or cohabiting in the United Kingdom indicate they are paired up and loving it.
Researchers at the Institute for Social and Economic Research asked participants to rate their happiness as a couple on a scale of one ("extremely unhappy") to seven ("perfect"). A total of 90 percent of married women and 88 percent of cohabiting women reported being happy in their relationship, while 93 percent of married men and 92 percent of cohabiting men claimed their were happy with their partner.
The study found the happiest couples are those with more education, without children, in which the male is employed and the pair have been together for less than five years.
Factors that were shown to influence happiness include marriage status, age and duration of the relationship.
After adjusting for several factors, the study revealed married couples are happier than cohabiting couples.
According to BBC News, in 2009 the divorce rate in England and Wales fell to its lowest rate in 29 years; 10.5 divorcing people per thousand married population (that figure falls to 3.08 per 1,000 people for the total population.
The United States has more divorces per 1,000 people than any other country with 4.95 per 1,000 people of the total population.
