(RxWiki News) Last Dance. She Works Hard for the Money. Bad Girls. You've heard her music. Donna Summer - known to many as "The Queen of Disco" has passed.
Lung cancer was her last dance.
According to TMZ, Summer died of lung cancer. "Donna died from lung cancer. Several sources are telling us Donna believed she contracted it by inhaling toxic particles after the 9/11 attack in New York City."
The Grammy and six-time American Music Awards singer was 63.
It's not clear what type of lung cancer she had. The most common is non-small cell lung cancer, one of the worst forms of cancer.
The American Cancer Society estimates this year that 226,000 Americans will develop lung cancer, and about 160,500 will not beat it.
According to her website, Summer hasn't been performing since March of 2011. One of the last entries on the site's "Latest News" section, says
"Donna Summer has reluctantly withdrawn from performing at the Music Cares event this week in Los Angeles. She is currently performing in Europe, in the midst of a schedule that unfortunately is not affording her the opportunity to get back in a timely fashion."
"I really wanted to be there, it's breaking my heart that I can't be back in time to sing and celebrate my dear friend, Barbra, who I absolutely love," Summer was quoted as saying at the time.
No performance dates since then are listed.
More information about the type of cancer she had will be forthcoming as available.
