Companies Under Fire for Illegal Hangover Products

FDA warns companies for selling products claiming to treat or prevent hangovers

(RxWiki News) The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warning letters to seven companies that were selling illegal hangover products.

These companies were claiming that their products could cure, treat, mitigate or prevent hangovers. The companies labeled their products as dietary supplements.

But the FDA had not approved or evaluated these products for safety or effectiveness.

The following companies received warning letters from the FDA for selling illegal hangover remedies:

  • Double Wood LLC
  • Ebnsol Inc.
  • Vita Heaven, LLC dba Hangover Heaven
  • Happy Hour Vitamins
  • LES Labs
  • Mind, Body & Coal LLC
  • Purple Biosciences LLC

The FDA said it was concerned that these products could harm consumers.

“Consumers may get the false impression that using these products can prevent or mitigate health problems caused by excessive drinking," said Steven Tave, director of the FDA's Office of Dietary Supplement Programs, in a press release. "Dietary supplements are not a substitute for responsibly limiting one’s alcohol consumption."

Another concern is that dietary supplements might interact with medications you are taking. These include prescription drugs, non-prescription medications and other supplements. Speak with your pharmacist or doctor before you start taking a new dietary supplement or medication.

The FDA strongly recommended that both health care providers and consumers report any issues with the use of any of these products to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
