(RxWiki News) A Texas couple received an unusual gift this Valentine's Day. They beat the odds of one in 70 million when Tressa Montalvo delivered two pairs of naturally conceived twins.
The 36-year-old Texas mother had the four boys by cesarean section at Woman's Hospital of Texas in Houston on the morning of February 14, according to a release by the hospital.
Montalvo and her husband Manuel, age 43, said they did not use fertility drugs. The couple already has one boy, though Manual said he still hopes to try for a girl.
"Attend all prenatal appointments."
The four boys were named according to an A-B-C-D theme:
- Ace weighed 3 lbs, 10 oz
- Blaine weighed 3 lbs, 15 oz
- Cash weighed 2 lbs, 15 oz
- Dylan weighed 3 lbs, 6 oz
Ace and Blaine were born at 8:51 am, and Cash and Dylan were born at 8:52 am.
“We didn’t expect it, we were trying for just one and we were blessed with four," Tressa said in the statement.
The couple said they were initially told she was having twins when she was 10 weeks pregnant. Then the number was upped to three - and then four. Montalvo's OB then referred her to Brian Kirshon, MD, at Houston Perinatal Associates.
“We couldn’t have been more surprised when Dr. Kirshon told us we were having four babies and that they were two sets of twins,” Manuel laughed. “We were trying for one little brother or sister for our two-and-a-half year old son, Memphis.”
Joanie Hare, MD, of Houston Perinatal Associates, actually completed the C-section. Montalvo was 31 weeks pregnant when she had the boys.
The hospital estimated that the likelihood of having two sets of twins conceived without fertility treatments is one in 70 million.
