Pred Mild Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with Pred Mild including the following:

  • Allergic reactions. Pred Mild contains sodium bisulfite, a sulfite that may cause allergic-type reactions including life-threatening reactions and less severe asthmatic episodes in certain susceptible people. Sulfite sensitivity is seen more frequently in asthmatic than in nonasthmatic people. Inform your physician if you have asthma.
  • Glaucoma. Prolonged use of Pred Mild may result in glaucoma with damage to nerves of the eye, defects in visual ability and fields of vision, and cataract formation. Prolonged use may also suppress the immune system and increase the risk of eye infections. Only use Pred Mild for as long as your physician tells you to.
  • Reduced immune system function. Use of Pred Mild may prolong the course and potentially exacerbate the severity of many viral infections of the eye, including herpes simplex. Inform your physician if you have an eye infection.
  • Thinning of eye tissue. Long-term use of Pred Mild has been known to cause thinning of eye tissues. Only use Pred Mild for as long as your physician tells you to.
  • Eye infections. This product is sterile when packaged. To prevent contamination, care should be taken to avoid touching the bottle tip to eyelids or to any other surface. The use of this bottle by more than one person may spread infection. Keep bottle tightly closed when not in use.
  • Delayed wound healing. The use of Pred Mild after cataract surgery may delay healing and increase the risk of complications. Inform your physician if you have recently had cataract surgery.

Pred Mild is not effective in the treatment of mustard gas keratitis and/or Sjögren's keratoconjunctivitis.

If inflammation or pain persists longer than 48 hours or your eye becomes aggravated,  discontinue use of Pred Mild and consult your physician.

Do not take Pred Mild if you:

  • have or suspect you might have an eye infection of any kind
  • are allergic to Pred Mild or to any of its ingredients

Pred Mild and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

The FDA categorizes medications based on safety for use during pregnancy. Five categories - A, B, C, D, and X, are used to classify the possible risks to an unborn baby when a medication is taken during pregnancy.

Pred Mild falls into category C. In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication and had some babies born with problems. No well-controlled studies have been done in humans. Therefore, this medication may be used if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the unborn child.

Pred Mild and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

It is not known if Pred Mild crosses into human milk. Because many medications can cross into human milk and because of the possibility for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants with use of this medication, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or stop the use of this medication. Your doctor and you will decide if the benefits outweigh the risk of using Pred Mild.
