Preparation H Cream Overview
Preparation H Cream is an over the counter medication used to provide prompt, temporary relief from painful burning, itching and discomfort of hemorrhoids.
It is a single product containing 4 ingredients: glycerin, pramoxine, white petrolatum, and phenylephrine.
Pramoxine is an anesthetic, or "numbing medicine." It works by interfering with pain signals sent from the nerves to the brain.
Phenylephrine belongs to a group of drugs called vasoconstrictors. These work by temporarily shrinking swollen hemorrhoidal tissue.
Glycerin and white petrolatum are protectants. These work to protect the inflamed, irritated anorectal surface to help make bowel movements less painful.
This medication comes in a cream and is applied externally to the affected area up to 4 times daily, especially at night, in the morning or after each bowel movement.
Common side effects of Preparation H Cream include mild pain or stinging.
