7 Ways to Boost Your Immune System
Chronic stress and depression can weaken the immune system and make you vulnerable to illness. Research has shown that a steady supply of stress hormones, like cortisol and adrenaline, can suppress the immune system. Chronic stress is also linked to heart disease and high blood pressure and can also have an effect on your white blood cell function. So why not try to do the things that help you enjoy your life? Laughter is often the best medicine. Take time to strengthen your relationships. Help those in need. Volunteer. Do the things that help you feel good! Research shows that people with close friendships and a strong network of support tend to be healthier than those living a solitary lifestyle. A good sexual relationship may be of benefit, too! In fact, a healthy sex life may provide benefits to your immune system. A study of college students found that those who had sex once or twice a week had higher levels of an immune system protein called immunoglobulin A than those who had less sex. Having sex, hugging and holding hands also causes the body to release the cortisol-lowering hormone oxytocin. So get your hug on and enjoy life — your immune system will thank you.
