Common Types of Lung Disease

COPD

According to the CDC, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the US. COPD refers to a group of lung diseases which make breathing difficult and block airflow. The two most common COPD diseases are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD patients are more susceptible to colds, pneumonia and the flu. COPD may also increase the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, lung cancer and depression. COPD can’t be reversed. However, treatments such as steroids, antibiotics and other therapies may help control its symptoms. According to the CDC, cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Most people who have COPD smoke or used to smoke. Long-term exposure to other lung irritants — such as air pollution, chemical fumes, or dust — and genetic conditions may also cause COPD.

If you have a chronic cough or a cough with a lot of mucus, shortness of breath, wheezing or chest tightness, see your doctor as soon as possible.
