A Guide to Childhood Vaccines

Meningitis

The MCV4 vaccine protects against four strains of bacteria that can cause meningitis. These bacteria are spread through close contact, saliva or coughing. Meningitis is an infection of the fluid and lining around the brain and spinal cord. It can become serious very quickly and can cause brain damage, hearing loss, learning disabilities or even death. Side effects of the MCV4 vaccine include soreness or redness of the injection site and fever. Serious side effects of the MCV4 vaccine are rare.
