The Health Risks of Kissing

Diphtheria

It sounds like something you might contract on the Oregon Trail, and although it is rare in the US, diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that can be spread through kissing. The Mayo Clinic says it causes a sore throat, fever, swollen glands and weakness. Back in 1896, an Indiana man contracted the disease from persistently kissing his sweetheart, who was ill with the disease. Talk to your doctor if you think you might have diphtheria.
