Health Risks Seniors Should Be Aware Of

Eye Troubles

As you age, you might notice that your eyesight isn’t what it used to be. While it is quite common for adults to require corrective devices, aging increases the risk of more serious eye conditions. Cataracts (cloudy lenses), glaucoma (vision-loss from optic nerve damage) and age-related macular degeneration (blurred central vision or blind spot) are all leading causes of vision-loss and blindness in Americans. These conditions can develop gradually, making it harder to notice until the disease has already become more advanced. It is important to receive regular eye examinations to help diagnose and treat vision-loss early on. Research suggests that maintaining a healthy weight and eating a diet full of leafy greens and fish can help protect your eye health. Also, take note of any family history of vision-related conditions and take steps to protect your eyesight, such as wearing sunglasses.
