Healthy Habits for Older Adults

Dental Health

Brushing and flossing regularly is especially important for older adults because the risk for cavities and other mouth diseases increases as a person ages, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). Dry mouth —a common symptom of many prescription medications — is a common cause of cavities, according to the ADA. Regular dental exams, drinking water with fluoride and cleaning dentures daily may help keep older mouths healthy. Quitting smoking also helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease, according to the ADA.
