A low fiber diet, lack of exercise and dehydration are all factors that can lead to a slowing of the bowels in older adults, according to the Mayo Clinic. Taking diuretics and iron supplements may also contribute to constipation. The Mayo Clinic recommends older adults eat a high fiber diet, exercise regularly and not hold in bowel movements.
