How to Quit Smoking

Understand Why You Smoke

Nicotine — the primary addictive chemical in tobacco products — reacts with the brain in a way that may leave the user feeling satisfied. In time, the body may become physically dependent on nicotine. When this happens, the user may experience cravings and withdrawal. While you may know all of this, it’s important to remember that the physical addiction to nicotine is only part of the battle. The emotional battle may be more difficult to overcome, which is why it’s important to identify why you smoke. Think about what triggers you to light up. Think about the social cues — certain people, places or feelings — that are linked with smoking in your mind. Once you identify your triggers, they may be easier to avoid and overcome!
