How Stress Saps Your Health

Stress and the Immune System

Stress and the immune system have a close relationship: Short-term (acute) stress is associated with a boost in certain immune system parameters, yet long-term (chronic) stress has been linked to a suppressed immune system. Several studies have found a relationship between chronic stress and a low white blood cell count, suggesting that individuals with chronic stress may be more prone to infection. Stress also is linked to a poorer response to vaccinations and may make symptoms worse once a person catches an infection. Furthermore, research suggests that certain conditions related to immune problems, such as rheumatoid arthritis, may weaken the body’s ability to respond to stress.
