How Stress Saps Your Health

Stress and Weight Gain

Multiple studies have connected stress directly and indirectly with weight gain. Many people experience increased cravings for unhealthy foods that are high in salt, fat and sugar content as a result of stressful situations, yet some studies have noticed weight gain even with a healthy diet. Cortisol, a major stress hormone, is one of the main suspects behind this weight gain, as it appears to boost abdominal fat and may influence stress-related food cravings. Stress can also indirectly influence weight gain by affecting sleep quality and reducing motivation to exercise. Talk with your doctor if you are struggling with your weight, as obesity increases the risk of many serious conditions, including cancer, MS, diabetes and heart disease.
