Metastatic Cancer: How Cancer Spreads

Cancer can’t be tied to any single factor and it is ultimately the result of a combination of various genetic and/or environmental factors. The American Cancer Society lists genetics, tobacco use, poor diet, physical inactivity, ultraviolet (UV) light and radiation exposure and other carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) like radon or asbestos all as known factors that can increase the risk for developing cancer. With that said, certain factors are tied to particular types of cancer. For example, excessive exposure to UV light through tanning is a direct risk factor for developing melanoma.
