New Medicines of 2015

Brilinta

Brilinta is a prescription drug used to lower the risk of heart attack or stroke recurrence in adults. Brilinta belongs to a group of drugs called antiplatelets, which help prevent the formation of clots that could lead to heart attack and stroke. This medication comes in tablet form and is usually taken twice a day, with or without food, alongside low-dose aspirin. Common side effects include bleeding and shortness of breath. While Brilinta has been on the market since 2011, a new indication was recently added for long-term use beyond one year in patients with a history of heart attack.
