Running Safety Tips
According to the Cleveland Clinic, poor running style can put you at risk for injuries. These injuries occur when too much pressure is applied to the joints. Patellofemoral pain syndrome, sometimes known as ‘runner's knee,’ got its nickname for an obvious reason — it's common among runners. This ailment is caused by the stress of running which can cause irritation where the kneecap (patella) rests on the thighbone. Another running-related injury happens when the Achilles tendon (the tendon that connects the two major calf muscles to the back of the heel) tightens and becomes irritated (tendinitis) when it’s put under too much stress. This injury makes up 11 percent of all running injuries, according to Runner’s World. Talk to your doctor about which muscles you may need to strengthen and the best ways to treat a specific injury you may already have. To work on your technique, talk to your doctor or consider seeing an exercise physiologist.
