Stroke Awareness

What Are the Risk Factors?

Lifestyle and medical factors may increase the risk for a stroke. These lifestyle factors may include obesity, physical inactivity, heavy alcohol consumption and drug use. Medical factors may include high blood pressure and cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, sleep apnea and heart disease. A family history of stroke, being 55 or older, and being male and African-American may also increase the risk of stroke.
