Surprising Facts About Melanoma

Prevalence and Danger

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, someone dies from melanoma every 57 minutes. Experts estimate 9,710 people will die from the disease in 2014. Despite accounting for less than 2 percent of skin cancer diagnoses, melanoma results in the majority of skin cancer deaths. The Skin Cancer Foundation also notes that more than five sunburns in a lifetime may double the risk of melanoma. Of the seven most common cancers in the US, melanoma was found to be the only cancer that is increasing in incidence.
