Surprisingly Unhealthy Habits

Flip-Flops

According to the 2012 National Foot Health Assessment survey, 78 percent of US adults older than 21 have experienced a foot ailment. One common cause of foot and leg ailments is flip-flops. Flip-flops are popular summertime footwear for men and women. Despite their ease and breathability, flip-flops may not always be the best choice of footwear. Not only do flip-flops provide no arch support, researchers have found that wearing flip-flops can result in sore ankles, feet and legs. A study at Auburn University found that people changed how they walked in flip-flops. This altered pattern of movement can result in painful conditions — especially for regular flip-flop-wearers. The authors of this study did not suggest that people should never wear flip-flops, but that they should limit use by wearing them only for short periods of time.
