Understanding Autoimmune Disorders

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most common forms of arthritis. However, it is quite distinct from other conditions, such as osteoarthritis. Unlike the mechanical “wear and tear” of osteoarthritis that can lead to joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system targets the lining of joints, which causes painful swelling. Overtime, severe cases of rheumatoid arthritis can even lead to bone erosion and debilitating joint deformity. Although the condition can occur at any age, it usually begins after 40. Talk with your doctor if you are experiencing persistent stiffness, discomfort or swelling in your joints.
