Understanding Chiari Malformations

Treatment

If symptoms aren’t severe, doctors may recommend treating the symptoms individually and monitoring them with MRIs. However, if the disorder appears progressive or if the symptoms are causing a problem, surgery may be needed. The most common surgery performed to relieve CM is known as decompression surgery. In this surgery, a small section of the bone in the back of the skull is removed to relieve pressure. If you have CM, talk to your doctor to figure out if surgery is the best option for you.
