What You Need to Know About Concussion
Research suggests that individuals who have sustained a concussion have twice the risk of developing epilepsy within the first five years of the traumatic event. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which the activity of nerve cells in the brain is disturbed, causing a seizure. Around 5 percent of epilepsy cases are related to traumatic brain injury, and the subsequent risk increases along with the severity of the injury. This means that while mild traumatic brain injuries such as concussion can double the risk of epilepsy, the overall increase in risk is still only slightly higher than that of the general population.
