What You Need to Know About Concussion

Recovery: Post-Concussion Syndrome

Symptoms of concussion usually resolve after a couple of days or weeks of proper treatment. Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) describes a complex condition in which concussion symptoms last for more than three months after the traumatic event. Rates of PCS vary, but research has shown that around 15 percent of individuals who have had a single mild TBI (such as concussion) develop long-lasting symptoms. According the the Mayo Clinic, the risk of PCS doesn’t appear to be associated with the severity of the concussion. The exact cause of PCS is not known, but increased age appears to be a risk factor. In addition, women are more likely than men to be diagnosed with PCS.
