What You Need to Know About Concussion

Recovery: Risk of Emotional and Attention Disorders

Along with the physical symptoms of a concussion, there may be some associated mental issues. Several studies have found a link between a history of concussion and an increased risk of depression, anxiety and attention issues. Of these issues, difficulties with attention and concentration such as ADHD/ADD appeared to be the most common. In people with pre-existing attention issues, a concussion may worsen symptoms and make them more difficult to manage. While it remains unclear whether these risks are caused by the traumatic injury itself, the results of these studies suggest that it is important to pay attention to the emotional health of individuals who have experienced a traumatic brain injury.
