The Worst Things You Can Do for Your Heart

Drink (a Lot) of Alcohol

Moderation is key, especially when it comes to alcohol consumption. Experts define moderate alcohol consumption as one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. A drink is 12 ounces of beer, 4 ounces of wine, 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits or 1 ounce of 100-proof spirits. Not only does drinking increase your risk for alcoholism and other health problems, but it may also increase your risk for high blood pressure and even stroke. Heavy drinkers may even face an increased risk for cardiomyopathy, or an enlarged and permanently damaged heart.
