Unisom helps you fall or stay asleep (insomnia). This drug contains an antihistamine (normally treats allergies). It is used for insomnia, because one of its side effects is causing sleepiness.

Unisom is an over the counter medication used to treat insomnia in adults and children 12 years of age and older.

Unisom belongs to a group of drugs called antihistamines. These work by blocking histamine and acetylcholine to help you get drowsy and fall asleep.This medication comes in a tablet form and is taken once daily 30 minutes before bedtime.

Common side effects of Unisom include dry mouth, nose and throat, drowsiness and nausea.
