Vermox is a prescription medication used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by parasites (worms). 

Vermox belongs to a group of drugs called anthelmintics. These work by killing the worms.

Vermox 500mg chewable tablet is used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm) and Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) in patients one year of age and older. It is taken as a single (one-time) dose, chewed completely before swallowing.

Vermox 100mg tablet is used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm), Necator americanus (hookworm), and Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) in patients two years of age and older. It is usually taken twice a day for 3 days when used to treat whipworm, roundworm, and hookworm infections. It is usually taken as a single (one-time) dose when used to treat pinworm infection. The tablet may be chewed, swallowed, or crushed and mixed with food.

Common side effects of Vermox include loss of appetite, stomach dyscomfort, nausea and vomiting.

Uses of Vermox

Vermox 500mg chewable tablet is used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm) and Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) in patients one year of age and older.

Vermox 100mg tablet is used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm), Necator americanus (hookworm), and Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) in patients two years of age and older.

This medication may be prescribed for other uses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Side Effects of Vermox

Serious side effects have been reported with Vermox. See the "Vermox Precautions” section.

Common side effects of Vermox include the following:

  • Anorexia (loss of appetite)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Flatulence (gas)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Rash

Vermox Interactions

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take:

  • metronidazole (Flagyl). Co-administration of mebendazole and metronidazole can cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis, a rare, serious disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. Co-administration of Vermox and metronidazole should be avoided.

Vermox Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with Vermox including the following: 

  • Convulsions (involuntary contraction of muscles). Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have some or all of the following symptoms
    • sudden, rapid eye movements
    • uncontrollable muscle spasms
    • clenching your teeth
  • Neutropenia (a decreased amount of white blood cells) can develop when Vermox is used at higher doses and for longer than 3 days. Report any sign of infection such as sore throat or fever, which may be signs of neutropenia. Blood counts should be monitored when Vermox is used at higher doses or for prolonged duration.
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis, severe skin reactions, can develop when Vermox is taken with metronidazole (Flagyl). Avoid concomitant use of Vermox and metronidazole (Flagyl). Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have some or all of the following symptoms
    • severe skin blisters
    • sores around the mouth, nose, eyes, vagina or penis (genitals)
    • peeling skin
    • swollen face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat

Do not take Vermox if you:

  • are allergic to Vermox or to any of its ingredients
  • if you have or have ever had stomach or liver disease
  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding

Vermox Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Vermox, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

 

Inform MD

Before taking Vermox, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic to Vermox or to any of its ingredients

  • have or have had seizures

  • have liver problems

  • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Vermox will harm your unborn baby.

  • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Vermox can pass into your milk and may harm your baby. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby if you take Vermox. Do not breastfeed while taking Vermox.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

 

Vermox and Pregnancy

In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication and had some babies born with problems. No well-controlled studies have been done in humans. Therefore, this medication may be used if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the unborn child.

 

Vermox and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

Small amounts of Vermox cross into human milk. Because of the possibility for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants with use of this medication, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or stop the use of this medication. Your doctor and you will decide if the benefits outweigh the risk of using Vermox.

 

Vermox Usage

Take Vermox exactly as prescribed.

Vermox 500mg comes in a chewable tablet form and is taken as a single (one-time) dose, chewed completely before swallowing. is used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm) and Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) in patients one year of age and older.

Vermox 100mg comes in tablet form and is taken twice a day for 3 days when used to treat whipworm, roundworm, and hookworm infections. It is taken as a single (one-time) dose when used to treat pinworm infection. The tablet may be chewed, swallowed, or crushed and mixed with food. It is used in patients two years of age and older.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of Vermox at the same time.

 

 

Vermox Dosage

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

The dose your doctor recommends may be based on:

  • the condition being treated
  • other medical conditions you have
  • other medications you are taking
  • how you respond to this medication
  • your weight
  • your height
  • your age
  • your gender

The recommended dose of Vermox chewable tablet for the treatment of Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm) and Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) in patients one year of age and older is 500mg as a single (one-time) treatment, chewed completely before swallowing.

The recommended dose of Vermox tablet for the treatment of Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), and Necator americanus (hookworm) in patients two years of age and older is 100mg, taken once a day for three days. The tablet may be chewed, swallowed, or crushed and mixed with food.

The recommended dose of Vermox tablet for the treatment of Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) in patients two years of age and older is 100mg, taken as a single (one-time) dose. The tablet may be chewed, swallowed, or crushed and mixed with food.

 

Vermox Overdose

If you take too much Vermox, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center, or seek emergency medical attention right away.

 

Other Requirements

  • Store Vermox at room temperature between 59°F to 77°F (15°C to 25°C).
  • Safely throw away medicine that is out of date or no longer needed.
