Zerviate is a prescription medication used to treat ocular (eye) itching associated with eye allergies in adults and children 2 years of age and older.

Zerviate belongs to a group of drugs called antihistamines. These work by blocking the release of histamine from certain cells in the body and relieving redness and itchiness.

This medication comes as an eye drop. The recommended dose is one drop in each affected eye twice daily. 

Common side effects include eye redness, decreased clearness of vision, and pain during the administration.

Side Effects of Zerviate

Serious side effects have been reported with Zerviate. See the “Zerviate Precautions” section. 

Common side effects of Zerviate include the following:

  • eye redness due to a large amount of blood building up in the eye
  • decreased clearness of vision
  • pain during the administration

Zerviate Interactions

No drug interactions have been determined by the manufacturer. However, you should tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Not all drug interactions are known or reported and new drug interactions are continually being reported.

Zerviate Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with Zerviate including the following:

  • Contamination of eye dropper tip and eye solution. Contamination might cause bacterial infection. To prevent the infection, never touch the eyelids or surrounding areas with the dropper tip. Keep the bottle closed when not in use. 
  • Zerviate should not be used while wearing contact lenses. Remove contact lenses prior to installation of Zerviate. The preservative in Zerviate, benzalkonium chloride, may be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Lenses may be reinserted after 10 minutes following administration of Zerviate. 
  • Zerviate should not be used to treat contact lens-related irritation.

Do not take Zerviate if you are allergic to Zerviate or to any of its ingredients.

Zerviate Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Zerviate, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

Before taking Zerviate, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you are allergic to Zerviate or to any of its ingredients.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Zerviate and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. 

There are no well-done studies that have been done in humans with Zerviate. In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication, and the babies did not show any medical issues related to this medication.

Zerviate and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. 

It is not known if Zerviate crosses into human milk. Because many medications can cross into human milk and because of the possibility for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants with use of this medication, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or stop the use of this medication. Your doctor and you will decide if the benefits outweigh the risk of using Zerviate.

Zerviate Usage

Take Zerviate exactly as prescribed.

Zerviate comes in an eye drop form and is usually used twice daily.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of Zerviate at the same time.

Zerviate Dosage

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

The dose your doctor recommends may be based on the following:

  • the condition being treated
  • other medical conditions you have
  • other medications you are taking
  • how you respond to this medication

The recommended dose of Zerviate is one drop in each affected eye twice daily 

  • Do not touch dropper tip to eyelids or surrounding areas, as this may contaminate the dropper tip and Zerviate solution. Keep the bottle closed when not in use.
  • Do not to wear contact lenses if your eyes are red. Zerviate should not be used to treat contact lens-related irritation. Remove contact lenses prior to Zerviate use. Reinsert lenses ten minutes following Zerviate use. 

Zerviate Overdose

If you use too much Zerviate, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center, or seek emergency medical attention right away.

Other Requirements

Store Zerviate at 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F).
