Cyklokapron

Cyklokapron is a prescription medicine used to prevent the breakdown of blood clots. Cyklokapron belongs to a group of drugs called antifibrinolytics which work by preventing the breakdown of blood clots.

Cyklokapron is available in an injectable form to be given directly into a vein (IV) by a healthcare professional and is given immediately before tooth extraction and following tooth extraction. Cyklokapron injection is used to reduce or prevent hemorrhage and reduce the need for replacement therapy during and following tooth extraction in patients with hemophilia as short-term use (two to eight days).

Cyklokapron can cause serious side effects, including:

• Convulsions
• Blood clots
• Eye changes. Stop taking Cyklokapron and promptly report any eye problems you have while taking Cyklokapron. Your doctor will refer you to an eye doctor who will examine your eyes.

The most common side effects include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Allergic dermatitis
• Hypotension (hypotension has been observed when intravenous injection is too rapid)

Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not go away.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Cyklokapron and other medicines can affect each other, causing side effects. Cyklokapron can affect the way other medicines work and other medicines can affect how Cyklokapron works.

Especially tell your healthcare provider if you take:

• Birth control pills or other hormonal birth control
• Medicines used to help your blood clot
• Medicines used to break up blood clots
• Any medicines to treat leukemia

Ask your healthcare provider if you are not sure if your medicine is one that is described above.

Do not receive Cyklokapron if you:

• Currently have a blood clot
• Have acquired defective color vision
• Have a subarachnoid hemorrhage
• Are allergic to Cyklokapron

Medicines can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Cyklokapron there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving Cyklokapron.

Before receiving Cyklokapron, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including whether:

• You have ever had a blood clot or been told that you are at risk of having a blood clot
• You are using a form of birth control that contains hormones (like a birth control pill, patch, vaginal ring or intrauterine device). Also tell your healthcare provider if you are taking higher than your normally-prescribed dose of birth control. Using hormonal products along with Cyklokapron, especially if you are overweight or smoke, may increase your chance of having a serious blood clot, stroke, or heart attack.
• You have acquired defective color vision
• You have a subarachnoid hemorrhage
• You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
• You are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Cyklokapron can pass into your milk. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby if you take Cyklokapron.
• The time between the start of your periods is less than 21 days or more than 35 days
• You have any other medical conditions

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

The FDA categorizes medications based on safety for use during pregnancy. Five categories - A, B, C, D, and X, are used to classify the possible risks to an unborn baby when a medication is taken during pregnancy.

Cyklokapron falls into category B. There are no well-done studies that have been done in humans with Cyklokapron. But in animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication, and the babies did not show any medical issues related to this medication.

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

Cyklokapron has been detected in human breast milk. Because of the possibility for adverse reactions in nursing infants from Cyklokapron, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or to stop use of this medication. The importance of the drug to the mother should be considered.

This medication is available in an injectable form to be given directly into a vein (IV) by a healthcare professional and is given immediately before tooth extraction and following tooth extraction.

The recommended dose of Cyklokapron for patients with hemophilia is 10 mg per kg body weight given immediately before tooth extraction. Following tooth extraction, intravenous therapy, at a dose of 10 mg per kg body weight three to four times daily, may be used for 2 to 8 days. If you have kidney disease, the Cyklokapron dose may be lowered.

If Cyklokapron is administered by a healthcare provider in a medical setting, it is unlikely that an overdose will occur. However, if overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention.
