(RxWiki News) There are millions of people all over America that need to be fed on a daily basis. Did you ever stop to think where that food is coming from? Food Day is near, so give thanks for food.
Not only do American farmers provide food for America, they also have to feed the entire world. With a growing population, food production is increasingly important. The Alliance to Feed the Future promotes Food Days to inform and spread awareness about the technology and innovations that are going to help the world avoid hunger.
"Buy from local food producers whenever possible."
Lowell Catlett, Ph.D., Regent’s professor in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business and Extension Economics and the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Home Economics at New Mexico State University, is a firm believer in Food Days and speaks about how important technology has become for modern day food production.
The old technology for farming and food production worked in the past, but the United States has become a global provider for food, Catlett explains. The only way we can be a global provider is with technology – we need to invest more in technology now so that we will be able to feed the growing population, Catlett adds.
Many nutrition experts warn people of eating too many processed foods, but processed food isn’t necessarily unhealthy. Processing doesn’t have to be negative - the end product is what really matters, Catlett says. The process of bread making is a wonderful process because we’ve been able to reduce the number of childhood diseases like rickets from processing bread and fortifying it with more minerals, he explains.
Now that there’s a better understanding of nutrition and healthcare, technology can help make food and the environment healthy. According to Catlett, this is the golden age of agriculture because we are making a difference.
The upcoming Food Day’s:
- World Food Prize – October 13
- World Food Day – October 16
- Latest Food Day – October 24
So celebrate these days and give thanks for the nutritiously healthy food America and the world are blessed with every day.
